2012 Convention
Convention Update for February PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 15 February 2012 20:20

Registration: The Convention is almost here! Have you registered for it yet? Online registration for the Special Package ends on February 24th! The package includes the lowest prices available for registration, Friday buffet, Saturday breakfast, and Saturday banquet. Each of these meals includes a keynote speaker! It also includes a t-shirt and a raffle ticket for a chance at the Special Package prize.

After February 24th, you may still register online, but prices for the meals go up, and you can no longer order a t-shirt. Online registration closes on March 3. After March 3, you will be able to register as a walk-in at the Convention. Please register online soon to take advantage of the Special Package prices!

Workshops: There are a limited number of seats in Tony Terceira’s Photography workshop, and a few more open seats in Scott Fellman’s hands-on Saltwater workshop. This workshop is also suitable for African cichlid keepers. I know you are out there! These workshops can be reserved online and are at no cost to registered attendees.

Hotel Reservations: We are able to offer a special convention room rate of $99.00 per night (plus tax) for the nights of March 21-26, 2012. This special rate is available through March 9, 2012. To receive this rate, please make your hotel reservations by clicking on the link below or you may call 1-888-233-9527 and refer to code N7Z. Online reservations may be made at:https://resweb.passkey.com/Resweb.do?mode=welcome_ei_new&eventID=7052440

Conservation: Are you planning on donating fish for the James J. White Memorial Fund silent auction? If so, please send an e-mail to the donation coordinator This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . At last year’s auction, we had so many donations that we had to add another table to the silent auction. Let’s make this year’s auction table even longer – donate fish and help conserve endangered species! We also will gratefully accept hard goods such as books or sets of fish hobby magazines as donations.

Club Table Sales: As a benefit of NEC membership, all member clubs are offered a club table during the Convention. The tables are available in the Vendor Room all day from Friday through the Sunday auction for clubs to distribute promotional literature such as auction flyers and membership forms, as well as selling club-logo items such as t-shirts.

This year for the first time, club members may pay a nominal table fee of $20 and also sell fish and plants on Saturday from 12noon until 4pm. This fee is waived for clubs that were represented at 3 or more of the 4 NEC General meetings. The table fee may be paid at the Convention Registration table. If your club would like a table, please let me know by February 20th so that we can have them available for you!

CARES Table: On Saturday, there will be a CARES Preservation Program table! It will be open from 12noon to 4pm for the sale of any species that is listed on the CARES Priority List. A few members have volunteered to man this table, but we need a few more volunteers, please. If you have CARES fish to sell to club member, or a club member of another CARES club, please bring them to the table, and volunteer for an hour. The benefit of selling your fish to another CARES club member is receiving a RED seal for that species! Klaus Steinhaus, the CARES Canadian Ambassador, will speak on the CARES program at the Saturday breakfast, and has kindly volunteered to spend some time at the table to answer questions and discuss the CARES program. NEC clubs that are also CARES member clubs are ACLC, BASNY, DAAS, GCAS, JSAS, and NJAS.

Advertisement Postcards: Boxes of postcards advertising the Convention have been distributed to all member clubs; the majority of them required being sent to clubs that didn’t attend the last general meeting. Please promote the Convention and distribute them to your local LFS’s!

Mailing Lists: Individual postcards were sent out to members who had no e-mail address listed in the club rosters that we received. Many were returned as undeliverable. Please update your membership rosters regularly so that we send postcards to current members. Better yet, send us e-mail addresses and your members will receive information from the NEC even faster!

Several clubs do not share addresses, either e-mail or USPS, preferring to use a central contact point. Please contact them if you are not receiving NEC general or Convention information. If you personally would like to receive e-mails from the NEC if your club is one of these clubs, please send me an e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and I will make sure your name is added to the NEC mailing list.

New NEC member clubs: I know that Joe has welcomed new member clubs to the NEC family in his President’s letter, and I’d also like to welcome them. A warm welcome to new clubs Boston Guppy Club (BGC), The Connecticut Aquatic Plant Enthusiasts (CAPE), and The Metropolitan Area Killifish Association (MAKA)! As member clubs of the NEC, your members will be able to register for the Convention at the best prices. I look forward to welcoming you to the Convention!

As always, we are looking for energetic volunteers during the months prior to the Convention or at the Convention itself! If you would like to volunteer, please send an e-mail to the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Remember, its volunteers that make the Convention a smoothly-running event!

Your Convention Chair,

Leslie

Convention Update for January PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 15 January 2012 13:17

Registration: Online registration will be available as of January 15th. This year, we are offering a Friday One-Day Registration. The $48 registration includes all the Friday seminars and the Friday buffet dinner, complete with the Convention kickoff introducing each of our speakers and Hans-Georg Ever’s presentation, as well as entry into the Vendor/Exhibitor Room.

Hotel Reservations: We are able to offer a special convention room rate of $99.00 per night (plus tax) for the nights of March 21-25, 2012. This special rate is available through March 9, 2012. To receive this rate, please make your hotel reservations by clicking on the link below or you may call 1-888-233-9527 and refer to code N7Z. Online reservations may be made at:
https://resweb.passkey.com/Resweb.do?mode=welcome_ei_new&eventID=7052440

Conservation: Part of the registration process is the opportunity to make a donation to the James J. White Memorial Conservation Fund and become an NEC Patron. NEC Patronage contribution assists the NEC in reaching several of its important goals. A primary goal is support and promotion of the more than 25 sister clubs, publicizing local club auctions and shows and the fish hobby in general. Patrons assist the NEC in recognizing members who breed and distribute their fish with the Breeder Participation Program, authors of articles submitted in club newsletters with the annual Articles Competition, and member photographers with the annual Photo Competition, while the prestigious Innes Show at the Convention recognizes top placing members who participated in the annual show season.

The James J. White Memorial Conservation Fund this year will send conservation funds to both the C.A.R.E.S. Preservation Program and CRCGS. The purpose of the C.A.R.E.S. Preservation Program is to encourage hobbyists worldwide to devote tank space to one or more species at risk, while forming an information network between aquarists, scientists, and conservationists.

The Center for Research in Global Change and Sustainability is based in Kerala, India and is involved in work related to aquarium fisheries & habitat conservation in the Kerala region of Southwest India. It is considered a global biological hotspot and their hope is to connect local ornamental fishing families with global markets to help alleviate poverty and motivate residents to have economic incentive to protect the environment and promote robust fish populations.

Photography Workshop: A 90-minute workshop designed to help beginners and advanced hobbyists improve their fish photography. The workshop will begin with a short
presentation on methods and lighting used by Tony Terceira in photographing fish in a photo tank, or in a community or public aquarium setting. Both a community tank set up along with a photography tank set up as illustrated in the workshop will be available for participants to have an opportunity to practices some of the suggestions covered in the presentation. The focus will be sharing and evaluating images to help everyone improve their photography. Both Digital SLR and point and shoot digital cameras will be addressed. This is a "learn by doing" workshop and an opportunity to learn from fellow attendees. The photography workshop is free to Convention attendees, although there is a 25-person limit. Please register for this workshop as part of your online registration process. If you are planning on registering by mail-in, you should register for the workshop online.

Saltwater Workshop:“Aquascaping for the Aesthetically Challenged- LIVE!!!”- Scott will present a live demo/ workshop with live rock, sand, and quarried rock (possibly other components as well). Part demo, part workshop, and part group therapy, you never know what’s going to happen when we take it LIVE! Workshop attendees will work with their own group of quarried rock and will be able to take their work home for their own tanks. The rock is suitable for cichlid tanks as well as saltwater – it is the perfect cross-over workshop! The saltwater workshop is free to Convention attendees, although there is a 15-person limit. Please register for this workshop as part of your online registration process. If you are planning on registering by mail-in, you should register for the workshop online.

Convention Website: New content is being added to the Convention website quite often. Please vist http://northeastcouncil.org/convention/for the most up-to-date information! To register online, please go to the Convention website at http://northeastcouncil.org/convention/and follow the links to the 37th Annual Convention registration page.
Advertisement Postcards: Postcards advertising the Convention will be available at the January 22 face-to-face meeting at the Crowne Plaza in Cromwell CT. Please encourage your
NEC Representative to attend this meeting so that your club may receive their postcards as soon as possible for distribution at your favorite LFS's!

As always, we are looking for energetic volunteers during the months prior to the Convention or at the Convention itself! If you would like to volunteer, please send an e-mail to the Leslie Dick at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Convention Update in October PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 14 January 2012 18:26

We have a theme for the 2012 Convention! Attendees of the General meeting on October 9th voted, and our theme is CARTOON CHARACTERS. Get your thinking caps on and start creating your logo. For the rules for the logo contest, please click on the tab for the “37th Annual Convention” and “Contests” at the new Convention website. The deadline for submission is 11:59pm November 25, 2011.

It’s the time of the year to send in your updated club e-mail distribution lists. We use this distribution list to announce that the logo contest is open, as well as announcing that convention registration is open so your members can vote for the logo of their choice, and register early to take advantage of the special packages pricing. Please send your updated club membership list to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . You don’t want your members to miss out!

We are very pleased to announce that our Hospitality Room will be hosted this year by UNYKA, the Upstate New York Killifish Association. UNYKA is based in the Albany area, with a widespread membership that meets monthly. Their website is http://www.aka.org/unyka/. Look forward to socializing with friends, fellow attendees, and speakers, while enjoying great discussions. Welcome, UNYKA!

Have you taken a look at the Speaker page yet? Speaker Co-chairs Janine Banks and Rich Litsky have been hard at work! Our confirmed speakers include Hans-Georg Evers from Germany, Spencer Jack and Klaus Steinhaus, both from Canada, and Bob Lewis from Rhode Island. Janine and Rich have been working closely with several more speakers, so watch this space for additional speaker names.

New to the Convention this year: speakers will present sequentially, so you will be able to attend every talk! There will also be a short mini-auction of the speaker’s fish at the end of his presentation, giving you the unique opportunity to learn directly from the speaker how to maintain and breed the species you purchase.

As always, we are looking for energetic volunteers during the months prior to the Convention or at the Convention itself! If you would like to volunteer, please send an e-mail to the Leslie Dick, the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Happily keeping you updated,

Logo Contest: Congratulations to Logo Contest winner Emily Candib of TFCB! Her first year entry of "Be a Little Crazy... Just for the Halibut" was the most popular logo. Her logo will be printed on the Convention t-shirt and pin, in the booklet and on attendee nametags, and on the Convention website. Well done, Emily! Thank you to Chuck Davis and Rich Litsky for their submissions.

Speaker Update: The Speaker committee has done it again! We are very excited to announce that both Scott Fellman and Rhonda Wilson will be speakers at the Convention. Scott will give two saltwater presentations and hold a hands-on demonstration/workshop. Rhonda, who writes "The Planted Tank" column for TFH magazine, will give two plant presentations. Tony Terceira will be holding an open hands-on photography workshop – bring your camera, and take photos of community tank fish. Tony will work with you to improve your photography skills!
